Mardini & Al Faur Agricultural Water Pump Station

Project Overview

Since May 2021, The Heracles Group has restored two key agricultural pump stations—Mardini
(Gharanij) and Al-Faʾur (Bahrah)—in Deir ez-Zor. Six new horizontal split-case pumps (1,000
m³ / h each) and the complete overhaul of four legacy units now push a steady flow of irrigation
water across 11,000 dunams of farmland, securing crops, incomes, and food security for
thousands of families.
With these twin stations fully operational as of January 2022, Heracles is ready to replicate the
model across Syria’s other war-damaged irrigation hubs, pairing modern pumping hardware with
local training and green-power retrofits to future-proof the country’s breadbasket.

The problem

Years of conflict left many of Syria’s pump stations in disrepair—rusted motors, shattered impellers, and fuel shortages reduced output to a trickle just when farmers needed water most. Without reliable irrigation, harvests shrank, incomes collapsed, and rural communities faced deepening food insecurity.

Our Solution — “Fix. Flow. Flourish.”

  • Modern pumps installed: 6× 1,000 m³ / h split-case units + 4 refurbished pumps.
  • Rapid rehab model: local technicians, quick-turn spare-parts pipeline, 8-month delivery.
  • Smart monitoring: real-time flow sensors & SMS alerts cut downtime.
  • Farmer-first training: on-site workshops for operation, maintenance, and water-saving practices.

Impact — “Water On, Fields Alive.”

  • 11,000 dunams revived: vegetables, wheat, and orchards back in rotation.
  • 5,000+ farming households regain stable livelihoods.
  • 25 % yield boost vs. pre-rehab output, bolstering local food supply.
  • Carbon savings: efficient motors trim diesel use by ≈ 30 %.

Funding Status & Call for Support

  • The Northeast Syria phase (three micro-labs) is fully funded and operational.
  • To extend this success nationwide and underwrite no-cost limbs for the most vulnerable, Heracles welcomes additional partners and donations.

Future Needs — “Irrigating All of Syria.”

  • National scale-up: rehab 10 additional pump stations along the Euphrates, Orontes, and coastal plains—bringing reliable water within reach of 60,000 dunams more farmland.
  • Renewable retrofits: integrate solar-powered drives and battery banks to slash fuel costs and keep pumps running during grid outages.
  • Equipment roster: procure 18 high-capacity pumps, 12 solar arrays, and 20,000 m of replacement piping.
  • Capacity building: train 80 Syrian technicians in pump maintenance, solar upkeep, and remote monitoring.
  • Water-Equity Fund: create a €400 k subsidy pool to cover electricity/diesel for low-income farmers during the first two growing seasons.
  • Data dashboard: expand the flow-meter SMS system into a national water-management platform for planners and cooperatives.
