The Heracles Group was founded in March 2019, built upon the extensive experience and dedication of its founding members who had been working in conflict-affected regions for years prior. Our organization emerged from a critical need identified during comprehensive field assessments: communities devastated by war required not just immediate humanitarian aid, but strategic, sustainable solutions that could restore both infrastructure and hope.
Before our official founding, our team had spent over two years documenting the breadth and depth of destruction across Free Syria under the Syrian Foundation for Sustainable Development. This extensive mapping and assessment work provided us with unparalleled insight into the specific needs, priorities, and potential solutions for communities emerging from conflict. With staffed offices in
Ein Issa and Hajin, Syria, we maintained continuous dialogue with local leadership to ensure that our eventual interventions would be community-driven and culturally appropriate.
Our first project exemplified our philosophy of starting with community needs: the renovation of a central park in Raqqa. While others might view a park as non-essential, we understood that restoring spaces for community gathering and normalcy was crucial for psychological recovery and social cohesion. This project, covered by international media including Voice of America, demonstrated our commitment to holistic community restoration.
From this foundation, we rapidly expanded our scope and impact. Today, we are actively working on assessments for 40 schools, a major hospital, and critical water pumping stations in Der Az Zour, while operating four prosthetics centers and numerous infrastructure projects across the region. Our growth from a single park renovation to comprehensive community development programs reflects both the trust we have earned from local communities and our evolving understanding of what sustainable recovery requires.
The Heracles Group’s approach is fundamentally different from traditional humanitarian organizations. We combine the strategic thinking of former military personnel, the technical expertise of engineers and technologists, and the cultural understanding of Middle Eastern specialists to create comprehensive, sustainable solutions for complex challenges.
Community-Centered Development Our work begins with extensive community consultation and needs assessment. We maintain permanent field offices staffed by local engineers and support personnel who live and work within the communities we serve. This embedded approach ensures that every project reflects genuine community priorities rather than external assumptions about what communities need. Local leadership is involved at every stage, from initial planning through implementation and long-term maintenance.
Technology as an Enabler We leverage cutting-edge technology not as an end in itself, but as a powerful tool for addressing immediate needs and building long-term capacity. Our 3D printing programs produce prosthetics that would otherwise be unaffordable or unavailable. Drone mapping allows us to conduct comprehensive infrastructure assessments safely and efficiently. Renewable energy technologies provide sustainable power solutions that communities can maintain independently.
Integrated Solutions Rather than working in silos, we approach community development holistically. A water pumping station project includes not just infrastructure repair, but training for local technicians, integration with health and education programs, and consideration of economic impacts. Our prosthetics programs combine medical device provision with physical therapy, job skills training, and psychological support.
Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer Every project includes a significant capacity-building component designed to ensure local ownership and sustainability. We train local technicians to maintain water systems, teach healthcare workers to operate 3D printing equipment, and establish educational programs that prepare the next generation for leadership roles. Our cross-cultural educational partnerships, connecting students internationally, exemplify our belief that knowledge sharing strengthens communities globally.
Financial Accountability and Efficiency We pledge that over 95% of donations go directly to programs and services, with less than 5% used for administrative purposes. This commitment reflects our military and engineering backgrounds, where efficiency and results matter more than bureaucratic processes. Our lean administrative structure allows maximum impact from every dollar donated.
Bridging Crisis and Opportunity Our ultimate approach is transformational: we see communities not as permanent victims of conflict, but as resilient societies capable of innovation, leadership, and prosperity. Every intervention is designed to move communities from crisis toward self-reliance, from reconstruction toward development, and from isolation toward global connection.
Scalable and Replicable Models As we develop successful programs in Syria and the broader Middle East, we document methodologies and create replicable models that can be adapted for other post-conflict regions. Our innovation centers, educational partnerships, and integrated development approach serve as prototypes for sustainable community transformation that can be implemented globally.
This approach has enabled us to provide thousands of prosthetic devices, assess hundreds of communities, complete multiple infrastructure projects, and establish educational programs that connect young people across continents. Most importantly, it has earned us the trust and partnership of local communities who see us not as temporary aid providers, but as long-term allies in their journey toward prosperity and self-determination.
